On April 22, authorities in Ethiopia’s Somali Region reportedly issued detention warrants for four social media activists and commentators, raising renewed concerns about freedom of expression and political dissent in the region.
Among those named is prominent diaspora returnee Mr. Bisle Omer “Rabsha,” who recently returned after living in Switzerland for many years. Others reportedly targeted include Abdi Mahad Mohamed, associated with the Foss TV Facebook platform, and Abdirazak Sahana.
According to documents reviewed by SittiSomali, the Fafan Zone High Court issued the warrants under reference number 276/18, dated 28/07/2018 in the Ethiopian calendar.
Observers say the move reflects growing pressure on independent voices and online political commentary in the Somali Region. Concerns have also been raised about the lack of public transparency surrounding the warrants and the limited awareness among human rights organizations and civil society groups.
Rights advocates argue that freedom of speech and peaceful political expression are essential components of democratic governance and public accountability.
SittiSomali calls on relevant authorities to ensure due process, transparency, and the protection of constitutionally guaranteed freedoms, including freedom of expression and political participation.
